April 14, 2026The Brain’s Ability To Adapt
And how you can too!
Have you ever seen those ads on instagram? The ones that tell you that if you spend only 10 minutes a day on their app you can rewire your brain? While those may be gimmicks, the science behind them is true, the brain is fully able to change its structure and does through neuroplasticity.
What Is Neuroplasticity ?
Neuroplasticity is the brain’s capacity to adapt. Just like how humans are able to adjust to their situations, the brain can too by rewiring itself and reorganizing its structures. Whenever you learn something the brain forms connections in the mind and when you keep using what you learn those connections get stronger whereas if you don’t use them they get weaker.
Think Of It Like A Forest
If you walk in a forest for the very first time there will be no path to follow. You have to be the one that creates that path. Now this won’t be easy, since no one has walked there it will be full of bushes and trees but once you keep going through it over and over again eventually you will create a path that shows a visible trail! This is what it’s like to learn something new, while it may be hard at first, your brain continues to adapt to the difficulty until it is not hard.
|
Trails don’t always stay though, if you leave it plants will start to sprout and bushes will start to grow again. Suddenly the trail will fade once again. That’s why you need to practice consistently. |
How Neuroplasticity Helps With Mental Health
Calming Your Fear Centre
By looking at peaceful images and doing practices like mindfulness once can actually lower the reactivity of the part of the brain that detects threats. This way you can train your brain to only fear what it needs to.
Building Healthy Habits
Through habit loops one can start small and slowly build up with healthy goals by repeating consistently. When you get the specific outcome you crave as a reward then your body will start craving the original reason for creating the habit.
Mindfullness and Meditation
Through breathwork and somatic exercises the nervous system learns to regulate itself and once you do those exercises enough they become like second nature, allowing you to be calmer overall.
Self Compassion
Depression and anxiety are fuelled by negative thought patterns. Changing those patterns by practicing self love regularly can help the brain learn to love itself and shift from hate to empowerment.
