Perfectionism and High-Functioning Anxiety: When Success Comes at the Cost of Your Well-Being

“The goal was never to empty the suitcase out and pretend it’s not there. The goal is to understand what’s in it.”
You Can’t Return This Baggage. But You Can Repack It.
A lot of people walk into therapy thinking the goal is to get rid of anxiety and while we get it, actual therapy is much different.
We’re not in the business of repressing your emotions. We’re in the business of helping you regulate them so that the hard feelings can sit alongside the good ones, instead of running the whole show.
Think of Your Emotions Like a Suitcase
Everyone’s carrying one. But the question isn’t whether you have baggage, it’s can you find what you need when you open it. For example:
A Messy Suitcase
Everything gets thrown in and the lid forced shut. When you need calm, or clarity, or patience, you have to dig through everything else just to find it.
An Organized Suitcase
Nothing’s missing, it’s just sorted. The hard emotions are still in there, right next to the good ones. You just know how to reach each one.
That’s what therapy actually does. It doesn’t take the suitcase away. It teaches you how to unpack it, sort it, and repack it so you can live with what’s in there instead of sitting on the lid, hoping it stays shut.

Quick Quiz
What’s Your Suitcase Style?
Don’t know what your suitcase is looking like? Answer these 3 in your head, tally up your A’s, B’s, and C’s, then scroll down for your result.
When a hard emotion shows up, you usually…
A. Shove it down and hope it goes away
B. Feel it fully, but it takes over everything
C. Notice it, name it, and decide what to do next
Your “suitcase” right now looks like…
A. Zipped shut, sitting under the bed, don’t ask
B. Wide open, contents everywhere, mid-repack
C. Mostly organized, with a few loose socks
If therapy could give you one thing, it’d be…
A. A way to stop feeling this stuff altogether
B. Someone to help me make sense of the chaos
C. Better tools for the sorting I’ve already started
Your Results
Mostly A’s — The Sealed Suitcase. You’ve gotten very good at keeping the lid shut. Therapy can help you open it somewhere safe.
Mostly B’s — The Mid-Repack. Everything’s out on the bed and it feels like a lot right now. That’s actually a great place to start sorting from.
Mostly C’s — The Frequent Flyer. You’ve already got systems in place. Therapy can help you fine-tune them for whatever’s coming next.
