Trauma affects not just the mind, but also the body. Traditional talk therapy offers powerful tools for healing, but sometimes words alone are not enough. That’s where therapeutic movement comes in. Therapeutic movement provides a gentle, intentional way to release these stored emotions, improve nervous system regulation, and cultivate a sense of safety within your body.
Why Movement Matters in Trauma Recovery
Trauma often leaves its mark on the body. You may experience muscle tension, fatigue, chronic pain, or feel disconnected from your physical self.
Unlike traditional yoga or exercise, therapeutic movement is not focused on physical fitness or flexibility. Instead, it invites you to move in ways that feel natural and restorative, guided by your own inner experience.
Key Benefits of Therapeutic Movement
Body Awareness: Reconnect with your physical sensations in a safe and supportive environment.
Stress Release: Gently discharge stored tension and regulate your nervous system.
Emotional Processing: Access and process emotions that may be difficult to express verbally.
Empowerment: Build confidence in your body’s ability to support your healing.
A Simple Grounding Exercise: Reclaiming Calm
If you’re feeling overwhelmed or disconnected, grounding techniques can bring you back to the present moment. Try this gentle practice in a quiet space:
Notice where your tongue is in your mouth. Is it resting on the roof of your mouth.
Gently release your tongue. Let it relax.
Now, only let the tip of your tongue touch the back of your front two teeth.
Keep your teeth together, but slightly part your lips.
Observe the space between your tongue and the roof of your mouth.
Take a moment to notice your breath. Feel the temperature of the air as it enters and leaves your body.
This exercise encourages mindfulness and relaxation, helping your nervous system shift out of a heightened state of stress.
