Sometimes life happens and appointments get missed, we totally get that. Your car breaks down, work runs late, the kids get sick, or you simply forget. These things are completely normal and human.
With that being said, sometimes not showing up can be our brain’s way of protecting us from something that feels overwhelming, scary, or too much to handle in that moment.
And honestly? We’re just curious.
When you miss an appointment, what’s usually going on for you? Is it:
Genuine life stuff that got in the way?
That you’re feeling overwhelmed about what you might need to talk about?
The worry about being judged or being vulnerable?
That you feel like you’re not ready to dive into certain topics?
If that sounds familiar, you're not alone.
There’s no judgment here, avoidance is one of the most human things we do. It’s actually a pretty smart protective mechanism, even when it doesn’t feel helpful in the long run.
We see it all the time, but the thing is, the sessions we most want to avoid are often the ones where the most important work happens.
Instead of no-showing, try to remember:
You don’t need to have it figured out to show up
Your therapist has seen avoidance before
Showing up scared is still showing up
You can have lighter sessions without getting into the deeper stuff
Even talking about wanting to avoid therapy IS therapy
We’re here for you through all of it, so whether you’re reading this thinking “they’re definitely talking about me” or “glad that’s not my problem,” just know that we want to support you whenever you’re ready to dig into whatever’s going on.
